2023 Screening

The Unsung Heroes program yesterday was amazing. Your fabulous videos (so impactful in just 6 minutes each), and your wonderful remarks about each Unsung Hero touched me deeply. Thank you for including me in the selection process. I had the honor of being in the presence of six remarkable human beings last night. Thank you for making it happen. Onward!

It was such a privilege to be in the audience last night for the presentation of the Unsung Heroes awards. The life stories of the six awardees – and the impact they are having on the lives of others – was beautifully conveyed through the videos, your spoken words, and their humble remarks. Your goal of bringing attention to these remarkable people and in so doing impacting the lives of all of us who learn about their remarkable contributions was more than fully realized. I, for one, plan to let my family and friends know about them, too – thanks to the video you post.Thank you for your kind, welcoming way as MC at the event. I appreciated the thoughts you shared as you introduced each person. Thank you for your months of hard work that preceded the event. Please extend my congratulations to all who created the videos. Each one was a testament to the power of video to tell stories through imagery, as well as the spoken word, in a unique and powerful way. As you will recall Ms Grant was my nominee. I thank the committee for selecting her as one of the honorees. Though I have known her for many years, I did not know about the tragedy that set her life on a new course of giving so selflessly to others. I am very grateful that she received recognition through this award. Your comments about her were so accurate. Every time I stop by the EPA Senior Center to say hello, no matter what she is doing, she welcomes me in, sits down with me, and listens and shares with warmth and complete attention. I know she does this for all who enter. She is, indeed, a source of light and love, nourishment of body and spirit for our community. I am still relishing my memories of the evening and thinking about so many lessons learned. I look forward to the video postings when they are available. Yes, let’s stay in touch. I may indeed make another nomination!

You are amazing! I had been to one of these before but do not recall how impressive that event was. Your MC style is so friendly and welcoming – even the rules. And the comments about the recipients as well. Plus you looked stunning in your red jacket. The videos were so revealing. You have this magical way of capturing the essence of the person while showcasing their work as well. And through Midpen I have learned how difficult each stage of the video production is, so I have a feel for what it takes to portray everything in 6 minutes. And 6 minutes is just right. Then conceptualizing, planning and delivering the whole evening. Know you had help but someone has to be the mastermind for this to come off the way it did. Again you are amazing. I wish there were a way to take this whole idea on the road. During these pitiful times at the national level, our political and other leaders need to get a dose of how to be humble and helpful. You cannot come away from last night without being moved and challenged to make a contribution yourself. So through putting it on, you are inspiring all of us to follow in your footsteps.

It was a pleasure to see you at the Unsung Heroes ceremony. What a terrific event, highlighting people doing amazing work. I would love to share all the videos, especially Millie Grant’s. When I looked a couple of days ago only one video was posted. I am contacting you to see if there is another way for me to find that video (or perhaps they will all be posted soon.) I was blown away by the Unsung Hero awards. Looking back I do remember seeing you at the Kevin Mullen event at the senior center. With luck my story and pictures will be published next week. Your professionalism and work behind the scenes is awesome. I’m working to hook up Jackson’s group with East Palo Alto Little League which has their championship game Tuesday. Turns out Sarah’s salon in across street from my favorite Los Altos restaurant. In my early euphoria I can think of 3 nominees for next year. My joy is working with youth, many from challenging backgrounds, to have their voices heard and speak with confidence. There is so much more to do.

I LOVED attending the Local Heroes event you created and hosted on May 27 at the Media Center. I was both moved and inspired. The range of winners in purpose and achievement was truly impressive…Male/female/young/old – to see such a wide spectrum of winners with such an extremely wide range of backgrounds was truly enlightening!
